Auglaize County Auditor Urges Residents to Beware of Unofficial, False Federal Property Tax Relief Videos
The Auglaize County Auditor’s Office is alerting residents to be cautious of YouTube videos that falsely claim a new federal program provides property tax relief for older homeowners.
The video instructs viewers to contact their county auditor and request a "Senior Homeowner Tax Review Request" form. No such federal law, program, or form exists.
"We want residents to know they can always contact our office with questions about property tax relief programs, such as the state of Ohio’s Homestead program," said Auglaize County Auditor Linda Bice. "If something doesn't come from an official government source, it's worth verifying. There is no such thing as a Federal Senior Homeowner Tax Review Request form."
Ohio does offer legitimate property tax relief through the Homestead Exemption for qualifying homeowners, including many seniors, people with disabilities, qualifying disabled veterans and certain surviving spouses. Eligible Homestead recipients may also receive a one-time, state-funded property tax reduction in 2027 under House Bill 479. Current Homestead recipients do not need to complete a separate application for that benefit.
Residents are encouraged to rely on official government sources for information about tax relief programs and should never pay for government forms or provide personal information through unofficial websites.
For information about the Homestead Exemption, eligibility requirements, or to apply, contact the Auglaize County Auditor’s Office at 419-739-6705.
Budget Commission Meetings
The Auglaize County Budget Commission will meet on the following days during 2026:
- Wednesday, September 23
- Wednesday, November 4
All meetings will start at 8:30am and will be held in the Auditor’s Office, first floor of the County Administration Building, 209 South Blackhoof Street, Suite 102, Wapakoneta, Ohio.
Property Damaged or Destroyed by Severe Weather May Qualify for Reduction
Property owners may be eligible for a reduction in their real estate tax valuation if their properties were damaged or destroyed as a result of the recent storms. State law gives county auditors the authority to reduce real estate values for properties that have been damaged or destroyed.
To take advantage of this reduction, DTE Form 26, the Application for Valuation Deduction for Destroyed or Damaged Real Property, must be completed and returned to the Auglaize County Auditor’s Office, 209 S. Blackhoof Street, Suite 102, Wapakoneta, Ohio 45895. Those that qualify will receive up to a 100% reduction on the valuation of the destroyed or damaged building(s). The reduction will be in effect for the 2026 tax bill, payable in 2027. The application deadline is December 31, 2026.
DTE Form 26 can be picked up in the auditor’s office, mailed to you, or downloaded from the Forms section of this website.
Personal property loss, such as furniture, appliances or vehicles, is not considered by the auditor’s office. The value deduction is based solely on real property damage.
The auditor’s office is available for questions Monday – Friday from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm at 419-739-6705.
